Parents Of Down - POD “PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR PARENTS OF PERSONS WITH DOWN SYNDROME".
The main goal is to design, develop and implement a new training tool for family members and volunteers to help stimulate and educate persons with Down Syndrome throughout their lifetime development.
The intent with this tool is to try to reach the following specific goals:
- Detect and analyze the needs of families of persons with Down Syndrome throughout their lives, contextualized within the social situation of each participating country.
- Design and validate a useful and relevant training tool with the dual purpose of getting to know persons with Down Syndrome at the different stages of their lives and complement the direct attention that families receive from professionals.
- Study in depth the different fields of intervention: health, educational, work and social.
- Become aware of the specialized accompanying needs these family members have.
- Promote participation of the different professionals involved in the attention for persons with Down Syndrome and their family members.
- Improve this community’s quality of life by involving the families in the development process of their children, siblings, etc.
- Evaluate during the project’s development both the evolution and implementation and the methodology used to put it into practice.
- Distribute this tool among all those communities, agencies and related institutions.
- Facilitate access to all family members needing it through the intervention of a professional or multi-disciplinary team.

The multi-lateral project for innovative development called: “PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR PARENTS OF PERSONS WITH DOWN SYNDROME” has as its goal to design, develop and implement a new training tool for the community of professionals and volunteers working with the families of people with Down Syndrome in order to give support and guidance at different stages of life.
Down Syndrome is the genetic disorder impacting intellectual functioning with the highest incidence among the general population. At the present time it appears in approximately 1 out of 800 births and affects all races and socio-economic levels equally. This community forms a characteristic phenotype and creates some well defined needs for help.

FIRST MATERIAL TITLE:
POD Tool
Abstract:
DVD+CDRom+Handbook representing a multilanguage tool for relatives and professionals working with people with Down Syndrome. It is composed by a multi-language DVD organised in chapters following the life stage of the person in different frameworks (education, autonomy, sexuality, relationships...). CDROM annexed in the package is containing useful information (weblinks) allowing a deeper investigation on specific themes (as they come form international sources and national resources) representing all the participating countries. Handbook is provided in contry specific versions (in own languages) describing the situation (life, provisions, allowances...) of people with Down Syndrome in partipating countries: Spain, Italy, Greece, Romania. An international version (in english) of the handbook is also provided.

The main aim of the manual is to deliver information just provided in the DVD and CD. The manual will offer users some of the resources, that may be required from both public and private entities, to resolve doubts, receive support or request benefits.
